11 02 Endocrinologia International Day of Women NewsOn February 11, we celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 to recognize the fundamental role that women and girls play in scientific and technological fields. This celebration aims to promote full and equal access to science and encourage female participation in disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Although women represent, on average, 33.3% of researchers globally, only 35% of students in STEM fields are female. It is evident that there are still significant challenges to be overcome to achieve gender equality in science.

In Brazil, female presence in science has strengthened over the years. In the field of endocrinology, for example, there is a significant participation of women in prominent positions. Data from the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM) indicate that women are already the majority among associated endocrinologists, totaling 2,616 professionals, compared to 1,273 men. Furthermore, since 1980, 62.99% of those approved in the exam to obtain the Specialist Title in Endocrinology have been women.

In the Postgraduate Program in Endocrinology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), which turned 50 years old in 2024, women play an essential role in advancing research and teaching. Their dedication and competence contribute significantly to scientific development and to the training of new professionals in the field.

On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, it is essential to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women in science, while also reinforcing our commitment to promoting gender equality. Diversity in research expands the talent pool, bringing new perspectives, skills, and creativity, which are essential to tackling global challenges and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

May we continue to support and encourage the participation of women and girls in science, ensuring a more inclusive and innovative future for all.
