Denise Pires de Carvalho is currently the President of CAPES, a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Rio de Janeiro Academy of Medicine (AMRJ), a Full Member of the Luso-Brazilian Academy of Letters (2024), and a Member of the Editorial Board of the journal Endocrinology (2024-). She served as the Secretary of Higher Education at the MEC (2023), Rector of UFRJ (2019-2023), Regional Vice President of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (OUI-IOHE) (2021-2023), Latin America representative on the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network of Engaged Universities (2021-2023), Vice President of the Regional Conference of Rectors of Latin American Universities (CRULA) (2021-2023), President of the International Cooperation Group of Brazilian Universities (GCUB 2020-2022), President and Vice President of the Thyroid Department of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (2002-2006) and the Latin American Thyroid Society (2013-2017), Director and Vice Director of the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics (2007-2013), Academic Coordinator of the UFRJ Pro-Rectory of Undergraduate Studies, Coordinator of Undergraduate (1998-1999) and Graduate (2001-2005) Studies at the Institute of Biophysics and a member of the University Council from 2012 to 2016. She graduated in Medicine from UFRJ in 1987 (Cum Laude), obtained her Master's in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) (1989), and Ph.D. in Sciences (1994) from the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics. She completed post-doctorates at the Hôpital de Bicêtre, Unité Tiroïde, Paris in 1995, and at the Universitá Degli Studi di Napoli, Naples in 2006. She is a Full Professor at the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ, an Associate Professor in Physiology and Biophysics at USP, and a 1A Researcher at CNPq. She has extensive experience in university management and national and international scientific and medical societies. She is currently a Full Member of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the Brazilian Society of Physiology, the Endocrine Society, the European Thyroid Association, and the Latin American Thyroid Society. In 2019, she was awarded the Pedro Ernesto Medal by the City Council of Rio de Janeiro, considered the highest commendation of the municipality, the Tiradentes Medal by the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro, and was titled Honorary Citizen of Macaé, granted by the City Council of Macaé. She was Vice Director of ANDIFES, representing the southeast region (2020-2021), a member of the Management Committee of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Translational Research in Health and Environment in the Amazon Region (INCT-INPeTAm, from 2009-2013), and Coordinator of Binational Projects within the CAPES/COFECUB Programs (2010-2013 and 2018-2020) and Institut de recherche pour le développement - IRD/CNPq (2012-2016). Among her awards and distinctions are: Scientist of Our State of FAPERJ since 2003; the Senior Award from the Latin American Thyroid Society in 2010, and the Faz Diferença - Saúde Award 2011 from Jornal O GLOBO. She served as Senior Editor of the journal Endocrine Connections, Academic Editor of the journal PLoS ONE, reviewer for the Sta Op Tegen Kanker 2014 Dream Team Translational Cancer Research Grant, the American Association for Cancer Research, and as a project evaluator submitted to the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FRS-FNRS), the research funding body in Belgium. She was a member of the editorial board of the journal Endocrinology from 2003 to 2009 and the Scientific Committee of the International Thyroid Congress, held in Paris in 2010.
